Bowers & Wilkins Launches Its Zeppelin Wireless Speaker
Long awaited and eagerly anticipated, Bowers & Wilkins has finally brought back one of its most iconic products – the air balloon-esque Zeppelin wireless speaker. As far as comebacks go, Zeppelin’s is pretty impressive.
First introduced in 2007, Bower & Wilkins’ Zeppelin tabletop stereo system was widely acknowledged as the best iPod dock around, and apart from losing that dock, the 2021 edition hasn’t changed much in terms of appearance. However, Bowers & Wilkins are now exclusively prioritising wireless streaming over physical connectivity by dropping the dock and adding support for wireless audio.
Zeppelin can now stream the music you love through Apple Airplay 2, Bluetooth aptX Adaptive, Spotify Connect and the Bowers & Wilkins Music App. Not to mention Alexa voice control is now onboard for hands-free control, too. The latest speaker from Bowers & Wilkins is a serious piece of kit for your smart home in Jersey – where beautiful design meets best-in class sound.
Smartest and Most Flexible Zeppelin to Date
Following on from its Zeppelin Air and Zeppelin Wireless predecessors in 2011 and 2015 respectively, the new Zeppelin has been reimagined for the streaming age. It is, states Bowers & Wilkins, the “smartest and most flexible Zeppelin” to date. Other than the removal of the physical iPod dock, you will find that the latest Zeppelin marks the return of the distinctive rugby-ball-shaped, or more fitting, Zeppelin-shaped design.
Weighing 6.5kg, the elliptical speaker from Bowers & Wilkins, is a fairly big and striking device measuring at 210mm high, 650mm across and 194mm deep. The speaker is available in a dark midnight grey or a lighter metallic grey. Just like the previous Zeppelin model, a fabric-clad grille covers the front of the speaker, whilst the back is a composite material with raised physical buttons.
However, thanks to Bowers & Wilkins’ new Music App, users will be able to control their entire Bowers & Wilkins audio system through their mobile device to enjoy absolute convenience. Behind the cloth grille, the new smart speaker houses 1-inch double dome tweeters, a pair of 3.5-inch, FST 40-watt midrange drivers, and one single 6-inch, 80-watt subwoofer. Powering those components is a 240-watt amplifier, which together delivers a frequency range of 35Hz to 24Hz. All of this rests on a strong metal pedestal stand which creates the illusion that the speaker is hovering.
Powerful Audio Performance with Hi-Res Sound
The best news about the rebirth of the Zeppelin, is that the latest model sounds just as excellent as the original and two redesigned speakers that preceded it. The width of the Zeppelin enables great separation between drivers and is capable of delivering an impressive amount of firepower – a feature you rarely encounter with all-in-one speaker designs. “We’ve never heard true stereo sound this good from a single-powered speaker”, says Rolling Stone.
The smart speaker’s DSP circuitry ensures that the sound is always at a perfect level, no matter what volume levels you are playing. At top volume levels, the Zeppelin delivers a clean performance with a big bass response, whilst the DSP ensures things don’t sound too dynamically squashed. Bower & Wilkins Zeppelin truly delivers room-filling sound.
Enjoy True Sound with the Bowers & Wilkins Music App
The best way to control the Zeppelin speaker is wirelessly through Bower & Wilkins own Music App. Developed with the capabilities of Bowers & Wilkins’ product offering in mind, the app brings together many of the most popular streaming services, radio stations and podcasts all in one platform. As well as being compatible with AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and adtX Adaptive Bluetooth, the Music App serves as a getaway to streaming services such as Tidal, Deexer and Soundcloud, to name a few.
With the Bowers & Wilkins Music App, you can find all your favourite artists and songs right at hand. Simply search for the artist you like and you’ll be offered all of the available options for that artist depending on which streaming services you are subscribed to.
As well as being able to control the smart speaker through B&W’s own app, the Zeppelin offers built-in support for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. Alexa works just the same as it does on any Echo speaker – press the button on the back of the speaker to ask for the voice assistant or use voice commands by starting with the phrase “Alexa”.
